The Creative Process As A Road To Success...
boxchecked: One can see the creative process as a bumpy road and choosing between different routes when going from point A (beginning of the creation) to B (success, hopefully!). And that is exactly the amazing illustration/infographic that Virus Comix created, with such classics that every creative how there is familiar with like “Has it been done before?” to “Overthinking”, you name it. ...

BeerStorming explained (sort of)
So folks who follow us over at Wooshii will have heard us refereing to beerstorming. Creative thought is a difficult one just to turn on. There are any number of techniques and routes to getting your brain connecting dots in unusual ways. The problems however of working in groups can often lead to a form of creative stagnation as issues such as Group Think and social pressure kick in. At Wooshii...

Moleskine Love
With all the talk of iPads I thought I would express my love for my favourite pad. I will no doubt be an ipad lover soon also but nothing will replace my trusty Moleskine. Yes they are over priced notebooks but hey they seem to have some kind of soul. Moleskine have worked a genius piece of mareking and somehow managed to pursuade people, (me included) that a note or sketch in a Molesine is that...

Feature testing and a way to avoid feature creep
Here is a really neat idea I picked up off Mike Sikorsky over in Canada when I was there. It’s real simple but as often is with simple ideas…really effective Essentially it describes a way to test the usefulness of your own feature ideas. Given this typical scenario. You spot some issue with your online app. You decide that what’s needed is a new feature You ask your users if...

Have Faith: 10 tips for getting the most from...
Crowdsourcing sounds like a great idea but venturing in to the world can be a little daunting. Having used sites like crowdSpring and elance for many years and now sitting on the other side at Wooshii I thought I would post some of the things I have learned that should help you make the most of them. 1. It is all in the brief – What do you really want? This is the classic GIGO. The better your...

Genius Design
There is something soulful about good design. The simpler more functional the better. I just found this awesome blog (thanks to @catarino). The first article I spotted was on boxed water, which given my loathing of the plastic bottled water trade is not so surprising. This caught my eye though - nice little take on packaging and a great way to cut down on it. I can see it being a great hit with...

Business lessons from Gordon Ramsay
I have just spent a few weeks (still here) in Canada and been subjected to more TV than I normally would. Last night I watched Ramsay’s Kitchen nightmares and it struck me as a brilliant business program. For those that don’t know Gordon Ramsay is top British chef with a foul mouth and a reputation for plain speaking. The program sees him coming in to a failing restaurant and trying...

Crowd sourced lead generation
I find the whole NoSpec movement rather a Luddite one although I understand why they exist, (us humans hate change) So why do I mention them?.. Well I’ve been thinking about sites like crowdSpring and our own Wooshii and it further seems to back up why I think the whole campaign is a short sighted one. I like sales! I like seeing sales happen and the journey a customer goes on for a sale...

Business books - man some go on!
I have just read one of the best business books ever. “The 37 signals book of common sense” or REWORK as tehy entitled it. I have just read it once and I am going to pick out some of my favorite thoughts from it once I have re read it but I just wanted to share this point right off the bat. Business Book Length I have no issue with business books, (obviously). I find them interesting...

Staying Motivated
Some of you may know that I work very closely with this guy, Permjot Valia on a number of projects, (he is also an investor in Wooshii) He recently posted a really neat blog over at businessangelblog.com. The original is here but I wanted to comment on some of it here as it smack of some really great truths. Some businesses have been having a particular hard time of it recently, (economic...

You will be dead soon - Lesson from Steve Jobs
I was having dinner two days ago and the topic of conversation turned to life expectations. Shallow conversation I know but it passed an hour. I mentioned a recent video I found of Steve Job’s. Now I am not a huge Steve Jobs worshipper. He has had a huge impact on the world we know to day and there is no denying his achievements but for me I have just never gelled with his public persona. I say...

Bootstrapping - Lessons from the trenches
(I should say at the outset this post was inspired by Ross Kimbarovsky recent video post and in fact the last two points ring very similar) So Wooshii has been running now for around 6 months and I thought I would share some of the lessons learned. These are personal thoughts and relate obviously to my specific case. I do think however that there are lessons in here for anyone who is thinking of...

The Business New Guard
I rarely post on my own blog unless I find something that really strikes me but today I feel unusually compelled having just read a post that I feel should be spread. As a start it is no secret that I find it depressing the way business is portrayed by TV programs such as “The Apprentice”. Cut throat, sell your own grandmother, anything to get the deal.. that kind of bullshit. I consider the way...

Awesome user engagment
I am a big fan of crowdSPRING. I love what they do the way they do it and Ross Kimarovsky (a crowdSPRING founder) comes across as humble, approachable and hands out knowledge freely. Ross recently wrote on his personal blog a great piece on attaining your early user base. (Actually he filmed it but hey.) One of his main points was engaging and empowering your early users.

To Spec or not to Spec
(Origanally written for Wooshii) If i do work for a pitch then that is spec work Well only in the sense that the more work you do the higher the chances of winning with a pitch .What makes the design industry so exceptional that we don’t have to do work before winning work? I have run and worked in many companies and I don’t know of a single instance where you don’t have to do some work in order...

Ok so only a few days after I start this blog and it starts dying. Why? Well Wooshii, went live a few days ago and it’s been all hands on deck for just over 3 weeks. Firstly I have to say how awesome it has been to watch the site come together the more the pressure has risen the better the site has got and we (or rather Jim and Sean) have pulled some awesome developments out of the bag in...

People I would like to meet - Morten Lund
FROM WIKIPEDIA Morten Lund founded or co-invested in more than 40 high-tech start ups in the last decade, most famously Skype,.  In May 2008 Lund made headlines again with the sale of Danish social networking and mobile backup site ZYB to operator Vodafone Europe BV for a sum believed to be in the region of $49m. At 36 years of age he is one of the most active seed investors in Europe, with an...

Digital print - It's the future
This is a technology that has been fascinating me for quite some time. Most of us are aware of the Amazon Kindle, a screen reader for digital books. It utilises a technology known as e-paper. For me this is true science fiction coming to be. E-paper or electronic ink display is a display technology designed to mimic the appearance of ordinary ink on paper. Unlike a conventional flat panel...

Facebook will kill Twitter
OK SO I’m back from my little jaunt. Left you on a bit of cliff last time I left. But here is my reasoning 1. Twitter is just too big. Or rather the number of people following each other is too big. I have had to find ways in which to cut down on all the noise. It’s good for broadcasting which I guess is the point but once your following a certain number that’s it, your brain starts to melt. I...

This is just me lining up for a bigger post about how Facebook will kill Twitter. I spotted this today and it just resonated. Twitter has a head of steam at the moment but I can only see it being its own worst enemy.

Find ideas and innovate
Convincing your employees to come foreword with new ideas should be easy. The most innovative companies have culture a that supports and actively fosters ideas from within it’s own realms. Stagnant companies prevent employees from sticking their heads above the parapet but fostering innovation is diffcult to manage in a large organisation. A company, (Idea Exchange) allows companies to make the...
